Hang gliding in Lanzarote.

Come winter time Lanzarote is a Hang glider paradise.

When most of Europe is freezing cold and hang gliding means a flirt with hyperthermia the shrewd pilot gets themselves over to Lanzarote. Flying conditions in Lanzarote are ideal for most levels of hang glider pilot. There is a good selection of flying spots in Lanzarote and when the conditions are right and the famous 'ridge run' is on, then you will experience some of the most spectacular flights in the world.

Winter in Lanzarote means light winds, clear skies and good thermic conditions. Many of the flying sites are near the sea but this does not limit thermic production. There is pretty much no sea breeze effect on the flying.

Lanzarote has a different hang gliding for wind directions from NNW around clockwise to SE. SE to NNW is difficult to fly. The prevailing wind is around the North so most days are flying days.

The flying in Lanzarote is suitable for all levels of pilot experience. Most of the sites have plenty of room for landing and even more room for errors and overshooting.

One of the best flying areas are to be found is in the Teguise area of Lanzarote. From Teguise you will find the Famara ridge run. This is ranked as one of Europe's favourite flying routes. You take off from one of two spots then head North along a ridge to Orzola at the tip of Lanzarote. For a large part of the flight you are flying along the coast with the most spectacular views of both sides of the island. It is an awe inspiring flight and one that many pilots return for year after year. You can even finish your flight with a nice smooth landing on Famara beach. Then its back to your bungalow accommodation for flying chat and a few sunset beers.

The next most popular flying site is Mala. This is located on the North East coast of Lanzarote. You have to drive up a track than have a short carry across a dam. Mala is a really nice thermic site with plenty of cross country opportunities. It takes a NE to ENE wind. You can top land or bottom land.

When the wind goes around to the South East La Asomada is the place to go. There is an easy take off and top landing plus a large bottom landing option.

On the whole Lanzarote is a great Winter flying destination that has a lot to offer not just the hang glider pilot but also the whole family. There is realiable good weather and great beaches to keep the family happy whilst you get in some much needed Winter flying.
